Volleyball Drills: Spike Coverage

Spike coverage is a very important skill for a team to have and practice.  This is something that probably gets overlooked quite a bit at practice, but in reality, a team that  is good at coverage will be a solid team.  Here is one way my team practices coverage:

  • Set up a six player team on one side of the net
  • On the opposite side, have a player at zone 1, 4, and 9.  This is where an outside hit, middle hit, and rightside hit will come from.  These players will need to have balls ready
  1. Toss a ball to the six players and have them run an offense
  2. After a hitter attacks the ball, toss a ball right back in the court at the location of the attack.  For example, an outside hitter attacks the ball, the player on the opposite side of the net, standing ready with a volleyball, tosses a ball right back over, imitating a block
  3. Do this to a count of ten and have the players switch it up and take a different position
Things to look for:
  • players should be following the set and covering in the correct position
  • Players tossing a ball back in should do it quickly and switch it up, throwing it short and long
